3D Still Life
Think of 3D illustration as virtual photography. You have a camera, choice of lens, lights, props, and a virtual space in which to move everything. If you can't buy a prop, you have it made (or in my case, you make the prop). In these samples only the microscope, mouse on the grid, and the eye glass frame were purchased. I made the props in the rest of the images.

Uterus Under Microscope - Visual for a Gynecologic and Placental Pathologist's business card.
Milk Splash - Splash model was molded in polygons using ZBrush. Significant savings was realized creating this image in 3D over traditional methods that would have required both high-speed photography and clean up after every shot... not to mention much crying over spilt milk.

Accordion Fishbowl - Expandable fishbowl used to symbolize adaptability in brochure. To make glass look real, the lighting is from the rear. To make the fish look real, the fish, like real goldfish, had to be made translucent so that the back light could travel through them.
Barbed Wire to Vine - Symbolizing pain relief, 3D hot glowing barbed wire transitions to cooled chrome barbed wire, to wisteria vine combining 3D and photo images
EKG Mouse - 3D purchased model of mouse is combined with created model of mouse cord in the shape of an EKG line.
Blood Drop Mouse - 3D polygon model of mouse in the shape of a blood drop was created and combined with a Poser figure hand.
Continuous Loop Icon - 3D polygon models were made of each icon including continuous loop starting with Adobe Illustrator drawings being imported into model-making program.
Diamond Star - Developed for an icon for the Hollywood Star edition of Glamour Magazine, this model was built with all the facets of a diamond plus the 5 points of a star. To create the colors of light refracting through the diamond, a bank of rainbow-colored lights was placed behind the star.
Domino Patterns - 3D branding-color domino pieces were created and placed to form toppling lines of dominos.

Domino Man - 2 complete sets of 3D dominos were made using the clients branding colors and lined up to form the outline of a man.
Silenor Package - 3D model of package made from mechanical of package prior to having printed boxes for photography.
Oxygen IV Bottle - Sometimes, for a new business presentation, you get an idea for a visual of something that doesn't exist that you'd like to photograph. 3D provides a quick, realistic, and affordable way to make a model that fits the bill exactly. Here a small IV bottle becomes a portable oxygen tank symbolizing a medication that delivers oxygen to a tumor to aid in radiotherapy.
